Cuzco et le Machupichu

Nous voila à Cuzco dernière étape avant de rallier Lima pour prendre notre avion retour en Europe. La capitale Inca, passage oblige pour accéder au Machupichu, est évidement un lieu hautement touristique.  La ville possède cependant un véritable charme et de magnifiques bâtiments mélangeant culture Inca et coloniale. Au centre de la ville on trouve bien sur la Plaza de Armas avec la cathédrale et le temple des compagnons de Jésus. A quelques rues de la on peut observer les restes de murs incas, véritable puzzle en 3D composé de gros blocs de pierre (andésite) multi-facettes (jusqu’a 12 sur la photo) s’emboitant parfaitement et sans liant. Au-dessus de la ville on trouve le site de Sacsayhuman, une immense forteresse ayant servi a résisté face aux colons espagnols. Le plus beau mélange d’architecture étant probablement celui de l’église/monastère San Domingo construit sur les ruines inca du temple du soleil : Koricancha, le plus somptueux temple de l’empire Inca tout droit sorti de la légende de la cite d’or : El Dorado. Des centaines de feuilles d’or recouvraient ses murs et des figurines grandeur reelle se trouvaient sur le site (lama…). On distingue clairement les vestiges des murs du palais dont certains ont beaucoup mieux résisté aux différents tremblements de terre qui secouent régulièrement la région.

Cuzco was the last step before going to Lima where a plane awaits us to bring us back to Europe. The Inca capital is a highly touristic city as it is the departure point to visit the Machupichu. The city is still very interesting and charming with beautiful buildings nicely mixing Inca and colonial styles. The Plaza de Armas sits proudly in the middle of the city with the Cathedral and the Temple of Jesus companions. One of the streets leading to this place shows a beautiful example of Inca walls: a perfect 3D puzzle made of blocks of rock (Andesitic) with multiple faces (up to 12). At the top of the city is an Inca site called Sacsayhuman, a huge fortress built to resist to the Spanish invasion. The best example of mixed architecture can be found in the San Domingo monastery built on Inca ruins of the temple of the sun: Koricancha. It was the most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. Koricancha means "courtyard of gold" in Quechua, hundreds of gold panels were covering its walls and there were life-size gold figures (lama…). Some of these walls resisted very well to the different earthquakes that regularly shake the region.

A chacun sa façon de faire le Machupichu : 2 bus + 3 h de marche (avec 1 tyrolienne et un pont), un train très cher, un bus + un train cher…Bref on a beau se renseigner ca ne se passe jamais exactement comme prévu ! Pour nous il a fallu compter sur une manifestation des employés du gaz, résultat route bloquée au petit matin. Ce petit contretemps nous a permis de faire la rencontre de Georgie et Dave, 2 australiens vivant au Portugal, avec qui (en plus de Nicolas et Elizabeth) nous avons partage un mini-van partant au milieu de la nuit pour rallier San Teresa. C’est donc en mini-expédition que nous sommes partis de San Teresa. 3h et deux tyroliennes plus loin nous avons rejoint la centrale électrique d’où nous avons suivit les rails (2h30 de plus) pour atteindre Agua Caliente ou tout le monde passe la nuit avant de soit gravir les 1500 (il parait) marches ou prendre un bus pour atteindre le fameux site.

There are many ways to do the Machupichu: 2h of bus then 3h walking (with 1 tyrolienne and a bridge), a very expensive train or a bus and an expensive train… Anyway, even with the best information, it’s always hard to stick to the plan! In our case we had to deal with a strike of gas workers which led to blocked roads at the early morning. We therefore had to take a minivan to Santa Teresa that we shared with our friends Nicolas and Elisabeth and Georgie and Dave, an Australian couple living in Portugal. It is therefore a little team of 6 people that we started our expedition from Santa Teresa. 3h walking and 2 tyroliennes brought us to the electrical station from which we followed the rail (2h30 walking again) until Agua Caliente where everybody spend the night before the ascension of the 1500 steps (also possible by bus) to reach the famous site.

Le lendemain, debout a 3h du matin, l’équipe championne que nous constituions est ainsi arrivée largement en tête a l’entrée du site, Elizabeth pouvant même se vanter d’avoir le ticket number ONE ! Malgré une tentative pour soudoyer les gardes (a coup de biscuits secs) et rentrer avant tout le monde  il nous aura tout de même fallu attendre 6h du matin et voir la longue file se former derrière nous avant de pouvoir passer l’entrée du site. Peu importe nous fumes les premiers à fouler cette terre promise en ce Mercredi 19 Mai 2010 et l’émotion était bien au rendez-vous. Double émotion pour nous deux, en plus d’être un site magique c’est aussi un peu le symbole de la fin de notre voyage. Dans quelques jours nous serons de retour dans nos familles et parmi nos amis avec tout plein de choses à fêter pour cet excellent cru 2010…

The day after, we started walking at 3am, and we are proud to say that our team arrived first to the site entrance, Elisabeth bearing the ticket number one! Despite our useless tentative to convince the guards with dry biscuits to let us enter the site before its opening, we had to wait until 6am seeing the long queue that was growing behind us. Anyway we were the first to enter the site this Wednesday 19^th of May 2010 and the emotion was there. For the two of us it was even more than simply visiting an incredible sacred site, it was also the symbol of the end of our long trip, the Machupichu being the last major place that we visited before reaching Lima and take our flight to Europe. In a few days we will see again our family and friends with many things to celebrate as this year was quite intense for lot of them too…
